    Protein is one of the three macronutrients that we need to survive (along with carbohydrates and fats), registered dietitian Amy Stephens, RDN<\/a>, tells SELF. It helps build muscle and strengthen your immune system\u2014basically, it \u201cprovides the building blocks for every cell in the human body,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIf we don’t get enough protein, our bodies actually won\u2019t be able to rebuild properly and we\u2019ll start to lose muscle mass,\u201d Colleen Tewksbury, PhD, MPH, RD<\/a>, senior research investigator and bariatric program manager at Penn Medicine and president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, previously told SELF.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    How much protein do I need?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is about 0.8 grams<\/a> per kilogram of body weight (or about 0.36 grams per pound) for an average adult. However, your needs may be different. If you work out a lot or play sports, you may need 1.4 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight (or 0.64 to 0.91 grams per pound) to combat muscle loss. And as you age, your body doesn\u2019t use protein as efficiently, so you may also need to up your intake later in life, registered dietitian Hillary Wright, RD<\/a>, tells SELF.<\/p>\n

    But there\u2019s a limit. Stephens warns that, while protein is essential, more is not always better. \u201cOur bodies only have a certain amount of muscle we can gain, and that’s based on genetics,\u201d she says. \u201cSo eating more [protein] is not necessarily going to make us bigger or stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    How to add protein shakes to your diet<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Protein shakes aren\u2019t a replacement for regular meals, but they can be a good substitute sometimes, Stephens says\u2014like when you can\u2019t sit down for the odd breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or when you need a post-workout boost to help repair muscle.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s a way to fill in the gaps occasionally, but getting your nutrients from whole foods first is always ideal,\u201d she says. If most<\/em> of your protein comes from powders and shakes, she adds, it might be time to reassess your routine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
